Theatre for children aged 2 1⁄2 and up

A co-production of Ondinnok and Vox Théâtre

One thing Mokatek loves to do before sleep every night is to count the stars. Ever since his mother disappeared beneath the river waters, he likes to recount his day to the brightest star in the sky, his compass that protects him from above: the North Star. One night, during a full moon, the North Star disappears. It is the beginning of an initiation journey to find the bright star and realize his inner strength and courage. A voyage to find himself and his origins, guided by the spirit of sounds and animals.

Ages ago, before the world we know today existed, there was another world. A bigger world than the one you know. Long before you arrived on the scene, there were the cosmos, the planets, and the stars. In this wondrous world, there was also a huge land, an immense territory where birds looked down on the forest and saw a big soft bed of green, and the blue lakes were like huge tubs for the moose. This territory was the land of Mokatek. – Dave Jenniss

Using a contemporary format, the show gently guides children toward a relationship with their origin, land and Otherness. The stage set plays a central role. Children will be invited by the spirit of sounds to enter the world of Mokatek and gather in 4 distinct groups, symbolizing the 4 seasons, the 4 directions, the 4 elements, and 4 animals.

This project emerged out of a laboratory performed before the public in September 2016 that was supported by Projet 3e oeil, a professional residence and support program, and created in collaboration with L’Avant-Première artists centre and the City of Gatineau.

“Mokatek, is about the power of dreaming. Children have the gift of being able to dream freely. Luckily, this power to invent can still drive us once we are grown up. We just have to look beyond the stars!” – Christine Sioui Wawanoloath Abenaki-Wendat artist, creator of the Mokatek poster
