Tales of an Urban Indian

2006-2009

Description

Ondinnok, by translating into French Tales of an Urban Indian by Simon Douglas, turned for the first time to the contemporary Aboriginal Anglophone repertoire since Aboriginal Francophone playwrights are so rare. Tales of an Urban Indian also gives concrete expression to a new orientation for the company: to make room for a new generation of Aboriginal artists and to support their development.

Synopsis

The character Simon Douglas is a young Secwepeme from a small Aboriginal community in the interior of British Columbia. As the alter ego of the playwright Darrell Denis, he comes to tell us his life story and share with us the personal drama that he believes to be the fate of his existence – being born Indian. From his reserve of birth to the backstreets of Vancouver we follow him through the thousand events of a young man facing distress regarding identity and love. Making his way, Simon Douglas gives life to a gallery of characters from his Kukum (grandmother) Josie to Rhonda his artistic agent and, in the process, Alistair the eco-freak friend of his mother. A journey typical of an urban Indian today but which for Simon ends fairly well. He finds peace and self-acceptance. A raw text tinged with self-deprecating humour.
